If a picture says a thousand words, then I’ve got 54K documenting the trip from Annapolis, MD to Hollywood, CA in my flickr set. All shot with the same 5dmarkii I used to film President Obama, the Canon 16-25mm f/2.8L was perfect for the tight interior of the 4Runner and the vast landscapes Jon and I saw crossing the country.
The twenty year storm we drove through in the midwest was the real deal. My brother Jon drove like a champion for 12+ hours through the most intense driving conditions possible. We left Oklahoma City around 10am and arrived in Flagstaff, AZ around 930 at night. We found out later that they closed down 40 west not an hour after we left OK City. Here’s why:
Jon had a convoy of vehicles following us through this pass outside Albuquerque, NM. It was insane conditions to start with and we had a 6×12 U-Haul trailer fully loaded being pulled behind us, approximately 5000 pounds of additional, sway-able weight. I don’t think I will ever forget the lady at the gas station outside Oklahoma City. She told me her daughter lived in Tucumcari, TX and that the highway ahead was open but the left lane was snow drifted. She thought we would be OK but we should be careful. Now I know why that lady looked at me so hard.
An adventure that Jon and I are finally able to start laughing about, I’m smiling ear to ear looking out the window at 72 degrees and sunny. Looking forward to what comes next in this new adventure.
