blog bomb – 5dmkii manual control!

We spoke and Canon listened!  No more need to compromise with inferior workarounds, this firmware update makes the 5dmkii perform like a video camera that also takes ridiculously awesome stills.  Does this added firmware, with the implication of more to come down the road (24p anyone?), effectively trump the release of Red’s Scarlet?  With the 5dmkii’s 1080p and a full frame 24mm x 36mm sensor, all Scarlet has on the it is 3k image capture, 24p, over and under-cranking… ok maybe that comment is more provocative than plausible.  But with the tag line An epic begins with M I do believe Canon has flipped the flame switch to on.

For my new freelance business (have I mentioned I went freelance?) the 5dmkii could totally be the defacto webisode camera of choice.  Knowing that one should always produce with broadcast hd standards in mind, 30p is a great source frame rate for video destined for the web and can be easily dropped into a 29.97 time line and printed to HDCAM SR, IMX, DigiBeta or what have you.  All that with a little bit of ye olde ProRes transcode and Color grading, of course.

LATimes.com, WashingtonPost.com, NYTimes.com; take a page out of the Tyler Ginter combat photographer’s handbook and put these puppies in the field.  The 5dmkii very well could become the video journalist’s weapon of choice. Great stills, great video, and with a little bit of help solid sound.  Check out Tyler’s demo of the 5dmkii combined with a  Sennheiser Evolution G2 100 wireless lavalier mic:

vimeo – time lapse in hd

The convergence of high resolution DSLR still photography with 1080p HD video is upon us.

And I haven’t found a better example of of this convergence bearing fruit than the Time Lapse in HD Channel on Vimeo.  Combining High Dynamic Range photography with 1920×1080 resloution HD video at 60 frames per second provides a fresh, crystallized perspective of not just what in the world we are looking at, but how we are looking at it.

We are combining 35mm depth of field with (10 minutes a day over 13 days = 1min26sec)

and 3200 iso with a diffuse display of Zodiacal light in Namibia’s night sky

or morphing time into something that was just there a second ago

or figuring what the hell, let’s do 360 degrees already

and finally a broadcast network is catching on and putting the new on their air

So what does this mean?  I suggest the future isn’t now, the future was yesterday.  Now is when the rest of us are scrambling to figure out what we will upload tonight so tomorrow everyone else can see this world from a fresh, crystallized perspective.  Again.

FCProse Episode 4 – cut color compress 5dmarkii footage

Here’s the all-in-one video tutorial showing you how to cut, color, and compress 1080p video captured with Canon’s upcoming 5D Mark II Digital SLR with three Final Cut Studio 2 applications: Final Cut Pro, Color, and Compressor. I recommend clicking thru for the hd version to better see the application interfaces.

In this episode I walk through the steps to edit your footage in Final Cut Pro, perform a broadcast safe grade in Color, and then make a web compression for upload to YouTube and Vimeo using Compressor.

I work directly with the source H.264 video Vincent Laforet made available for download (no H.264 -> Apple ProRes 422 transcode this time around). I also discuss some system specs and rant about High Dynamic Range video. A quick tag surf lead me to this post that has an example of HDR video captured by something called the HDRC® MDC04 CL camera system.

What’s High Dynamic Range (HDR), you ask? Check out yet another Chad Richard HDR timelapse (click thru for the full HD effect):

Mr. Richard has done a lot of heavy lifting to convert a series of HDR stills into 1080p video (and then compress for Vimeo, of course). Check out his tutorial for this process here.

FCProse Episode 2 – Editing 5dmarkii footage

Whipped up a quick video toot for anyone who wants to edit the Reverie footage but is having a tough time working with the native 1080p h264 Quicktime files. I recommend clicking thru for the HD version to see the FCP interface text clearly.

Hopefully everything I’m saying there is making sense. Fast, good, and cheap; I picked fast and cheap.

**UPDATE**

Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation has posted their video analysis of 5dmkii source footage.  With the disclaimer that this analysis is based on footage produced by a beta model of the camera, they report:

It looks like the GOP-structure of the clips are one I-frame for each 15 P-frame. No B-frames.

Vimeo member Sebastian Stevens commented on this last video, stating

Watching the movie above seems to show the seem rolling shutter problem the nikon D90 has, but when you download the original video file, the video is very stable and shows no weird image skews.

I’m really looking forward to finding more original footage from this camera. In the right hands, this is going to be a killer video capture device. Now, what about audio recording… ?

blog bomb – canon EOS 5D Mark II

The game has changed.

Stop everything you are doing and go watch REVERIE by the Explorer of Light himself, Vincent Laforet.

From Vincent’s blog:

I’m proud to finally share this short film with everyone – no time for words – let’s let the moving images do the talking… Here is the raw footage (downsized to 1/4 resolution) from the prototype EOS 5D MKII that Canon allowed me to borrow over a 72 hour period. Many thanks to David Sparer and everyone at Canon…. The Behind the scenes video will be up shortly.

Additionally, Vincent is working with Canon to post the raw files from the camera for download:

Due to pretty incredible demand and a fair amount of (healthy) skepticism as to whether or not the footage in the “Reverie” piece is “truly” raw out of the camera, we will be releasing a series of raw clips – the exact same clips that were used in the “Reverie” short film – this coming Friday.

Good lord, he is claiming no color correction for this whole video, just the raw footage was used. And it’s shooting 1080p resolution to disk?! Combine this with the awesome glass of prime lenses and this may well spell the end for companies like Red Rock Micro, Letus35, Cinevate, and the rest of the 35mm adapter suppliers.

Holy crap, the world is standing on it’s head yet again.

Dual Display Downer

So I’ve slowly been reassembling my home edit and color grading suite and yesterday I finally rebooted my dual 2.7 GHz Powermac G5 and connected my new Dell 2408WFP 24″ LCD Monitor. This monitor combines with my slightly older Dell 2407WFP 24″ LCD monitor for a (potentially) sweet setup. I really like the addition of HDMI inputs in the 2408 model. As far as I can tell, the Dell 2408WFP is the smallest and cheapest 1080p monitor on the market at the moment.

Already I can see the green left to right cast on the 2408 that had been reported on the FCP-L and with both displays side by side with Mac OS X Medium Grey for the background, the 2407 seems to have an even red cast and to be slightly dimmer than the 2408. Hopefully the some kind of Spyder calibration will be able to reasonably balance these two displays. A quick search shows me the Spyder 2 has been upgraded to the new Spyder 3 Elite that I might need to get my hands on. But I dunno, seen a couple of negative reviews on Amazon of the Spyder 3 and the Spyder 2 Pro is still a solid product. A successful color calibration will be crucial for using my Matrox MXO to monitor grades in Color.

Additionally, there are tiny green specs showing up on the 2408 which I think stem from limits on the ATI X800XT graphics card although I don’t no for sure if this is the case or if Dell shipped me a bad display. I’ve also experienced drastic horizontal banding on the 2408 while displaying 1920×1200 resolution. After having been powered on for 24 hours the horizontal banding has not re-occured…

If anyone out there stumbles on this and has experienced similar issues your input is much appreciated!
